The Confident Pose system is a dedication to solving the core problem of posture with a robust, custom-engineered solution. We achieved this by meticulously designing a comfortable, discreet wearable that leverages an advanced EMG muscle sensor to ensure accurate muscle engagement and lasting posture improvement.
Phase 1: Overcoming the Limitations of Existing Hardware
Our design process began by identifying the critical failures in existing posture devices.
The Problem with Straps and Clip-Ons: Conventional posture monitoring devices are often implemented as straps or bulky clip-on modules. These form factors are widely reported as uncomfortable, conspicuous, and unsuitable for long-term daily use. Worse, strap-based aids can actually weaken the muscles needed to hold good posture by making the user's body reliant on the straps.
The Problem with Simple Sensors: Devices relying solely on inertial sensors (accelerometers) struggle with low accuracy and lack the integration of muscle activity sensing. They tell the user they are slouching but offer no insight into why (e.g., muscle fatigue).
Our initial design imperative was clear: we needed a discreet, adhesive patch-based form factor that integrates a clinical-grade muscle activity sensor.
Phase 2: The Custom-Engineered Design and Sensor Fusion
To deliver a product that could truly improve your posture, we developed a dual-structure configuration: a reusable electronic module and a disposable adhesive patch.
The EMG Advantage: We incorporated an EMG muscle sensor front-end (signal acquisition and amplifier) into the electronic module. Electromyography (EMG) signals provide critical insights into muscle engagement and fatigue, offering a more reliable and personalized basis for posture classification.
Sensor Fusion: The electronic module integrates the EMG sensing circuit with a motion sensing unit (three-axis accelerometer). This sensor fusion is key to achieving higher accuracy compared to motion-sensor-only devices.
The Electrode Patch Innovation: A significant design challenge was the adhesive patch itself, which needed reliable signal acquisition from the trapezius region. Our unique disposable patch features three separate conductive adhesive zones designed to prevent contact between electrodes, which would interfere with accurate EMG signal acquisition, while ensuring stable adhesion and solving the issue of users applying the patch without being able to see their back.
Phase 3: Feedback and Actuation Systems
Prototypes were engineered with user experience and active correction in mind:
Haptic Feedback: The electronic module includes a haptic actuator (such as an eccentric rotating mass motor) to deliver real-time corrective or reinforcement cues. This feedback prompts the user to actively engage their muscles, which is superior to a passive brace.
Smartphone Application Integration: The companion smartphone application was designed to wirelessly communicate with the device via Bluetooth. This allows for crucial functions like personalized calibration to establish user-specific EMG baselines and the delivery of structured training programs for long-term posture improvement.
By focusing on this meticulous custom-engineered design, Confident Pose delivers an accurate, comfortable, and discreet solution that addresses the fundamental need to train and strengthen back muscles.
